Where I stood, there was a lone tree stump glistening in the sunlight, and the stark contrast between the stump and the dark looming clouds in the background caught my eye. In the image below, I recall that there was an intense storm moving in, and dark clouds were quickly encroaching. Ask yourself “What features were present in this scene that made me want to capture this image…what was the attraction?” Whatever the inspiration was, this is one of the things that you should focus on when enhancing your image-try to emphasize it and share it with the viewer. When enhancing images, it’s good to think back and remember what aspects of the scene caught your eye.

I’ll also be using some other tools from the Nik Software collection such as Color Efex Pro 3.0, Viveza 2, and Dfine 2.0. In this tutorial I’ll demonstrate the use of this wonderful tool on a noisy, relatively low quality image that I captured back in 2002 using a Nikon 995 digital camera. The tool offers loads of flexibility and and high quality results with minimal loss of image information (just like all of the Nik Software tools). I hope they give you a good idea of the range of effects available with Analog Efex Pro, and how easy it is to create, modify and share custom presets of your own.Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2 plug-in is “King of the Hill” when it comes to processing black and white images. Here’s a quick overview of the eight presets I created for this tutorial. There doesn’t seem any way to move presets between the Imported and Custom panels, but that hardly matters since they work in the same way wherever they’re stored. Imported presets are all displayed in the Imported panel. Now just locate the folder where the presets are stored, select them all (they have an ‘.np’ file extension on my Mac) and click the Open button. It’s at the top of the sidebar here, but that’s because the panel is expanded ready to receive the imported presets – normally, the Imported panel is collapsed and at the bottom of the sidebar. To import these presets (or any others), click the ‘+’ button (circled) alongside the Imported panel heading in the left sidebar.

Just click on the download link below, unzip the file and then follow the instructions in the next step. It’s just as easy to import presets, and you can find out for yourself by downloading the presets I’ve exported.
Each preset file is only around 5 kilobytes in size, and that’s because they’re simply a set of processing instructions. The export takes just a couple of moments. When you press this button, Analog Efex Pro prompts you to choose a location on your computer to save the presets to. To export my presets for sharing with other people, I need to press the Export All button (circled) at the bottom of the custom presets panel. The main window shows the ‘Cyanotype’ preset applied to a still life image. You use custom presets just as you use those that come built in – they’re simply stored in a separate panel.
